హాకీ మాంత్రికుడు ధ్యాన్‌ చంద్‌. ఈ రోజు ఆయన వర్ధంతి.భారత దేశంలో క్రికెట్‌ గురించి తెలిసినంతగా మిగిలిన క్రీడలు, క్రీడాకారుల గురించి తెలియడం తక్కువ. క్రికెట్‌లో ఫలానా క్రికెటర్‌ ఇన్ని సెంచరీలు సాధించాడు, ఇన్ని ఇన్నింగ్స్‌లు ఆడాడడని ఠక్కున చెప్పేవాళ్లు ఎక్కువ అదే మన జాతీయ క్రీడ హాకీ గురించి, హాకీ క్రీడకు ప్రపంచ స్థాయి ఖ్యాతి గుర్తింపు తెచ్చిన వ్యక్తి ఎవరని ప్రశ్నిస్తే జవాబు చెప్పేవారు చాలా తక్కువ. అతడే ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌. ఒలంపిక్స్‌ పోటీల్లో హాకీలో భారత దేశానికి స్వర్ణ పతకాన్ని సాధించడంలో క్రీడా మాంత్రికుడు ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ కీలక పాత్ర పోషించారు. కాగా ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ క్రీడా మైదానంలోకి అడుగు పెట్టగానే ఆటకు నూతన జవసత్వం వస్తుంది. బంతిని వేగంగా, నైపుణ్యంగా నడపడం అతని సొంతం. ఒక పోటీలో ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ ఆట తీరును చూసి ఆశ్చర్యపడి ఇతని హాకీ కర్రలో అయస్కాంతం ఉందని జర్మన్లు అనుమానపడి కర్రను విరగ్గొట్టి చూసి పరీక్షించగా అందులో ఏమీ లేదు. కానీ ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ మరో కర్రతో యధావిధిగా తన ఆటతీరును కొనసాగించాడు. ఎప్పటిలాగే అడ్డు, ఆపూ లేకుండా' గోల్స్‌' చేశాడు. దీన్ని బట్టి ధ్యాన్‌ చంద్‌ ఎంతటి గొప్ప హాకీ ఆటగాడో ప్రపంచ ప్రజలకు అర్థమైంది! కాగా హాకీ ఆటలో పేరుగాంచిన ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ అలహాబాద్‌లో 1905 ఆగష్టు 29 న జన్మించాడు. హైస్కూల్‌ చదువుతో తన విద్యకు ముగింపు పలికారు. కుటుంబాన్ని పోషించడం కోసం సైన్యంలో బ్రాహ్మిన్‌ రెజిమెంటులో సిపాయిగా చేరారు. హాకీ ఆటపై అతనికి మోజు ఎప్పుడు కలిగిందో ఎవరికీ తెలియదు. ఎప్పుడు తీరిక దొరికినా హాకీ ఆడుతూ ఉండేవారు. ఆ రోజుల్లో హాకీ ఆటకు శిక్షణ ఇచ్చే సదుపాయాలు ఏమీ ఉండేవి కావు. ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ స్వయం కృషితో హాకీ ఆట నేర్చుకున్నారు.ఈ నేపధ్యంలో ఇన్‌ఫాంట్రీ రెజిమెంటులో ఆడే ధ్యాన్‌ చంద్‌ను 1926 లో న్యూజిలాండ్‌కు వెళ్లే భారత జట్టుకు ఎంపిక చేశారు. హాలెండ్‌లో 1928 లో జరిగిన ఒలంపిక్స్‌ పోటీల్లో భారత దేశం హాకీలో మొదటి స్వర్ణ పతకం గెలుచుకుంది. గెలుపొందిన జట్టులో ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ సభ్యుడుగా ఉన్నారు. కాగా హాలెండ్‌, భారత దేశాల మధ్య ఆఖరి పోటీ జరిగే నాటికి ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ తీవ్రమైన జ్వరంతో బాధ పడుతున్నప్పటికీదేశ భక్తి కలిగిన సైనికుడు కావడంతో తన విధిలో అలసత్వం చూపకుండా సింహం లాగా ముందుకు దూకి హాకీ ఆటలో తన అద్భుత నైపుణ్యాన్ని ప్రదర్శించాడు. భారత దేశం 3 - 0 తో విజయం సాధించడానికి ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ కారకుడయ్యారు. ఇందులో రెండు గోల్స్‌ ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ చేసినవే కావడం విశేషం. కాగా 1932 లో ఒలంపిక్స్‌ పోటీలు అమెరికాలోని లాస్‌ ఏంజెల్స్‌లో జరిగాయి. రెండు ఆటలు ఆడగానే భారత దేశానికి స్వర్ణ పతకం లభించింది. జపాన్‌తో జరిగిన మొదటి పోటీలో 11-1 తేడాతో భారత్‌ గెలిచింది. ఇందులో ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ నాలుగు గోల్స్‌ చేశారు. ఇక రెండవ పోటీ ఆగష్టు 11న అమెరికాతో జరిగింది. ఆ పోటీలో భారత్‌ అమెరికాను 24 - 1 తేడాతో ఓడించింది. ఒలింపిక్‌ చరిత్రలో ఇది ఒక సరి కొత్త రికార్డు. ఇందులో ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ ఒక్కరే ఎనిమిది గోల్స్‌ చేశారు. అలాగే 1935 లో మన దేశం ఆస్ట్రేలియా, న్యూజిలాండ్‌లలోపర్యటించి హాకీలో 48 ఆటలు ఆడింది. ఈ ఆటల్లో భారతదేశం సాధించిన సంఖ్య ఎంతో తెలుసా, అక్షరాలా 548 గోల్స్‌. వీటిలో ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ ఒక్కరే 200 చేశారు. ఈ విషయం తెలిసిన నాటి విఖ్యాత క్రికెట్‌ ఆటగాడు సర్‌ బ్రాడ్‌మన్‌ భారతదేశపు హాకీ ఆటగాళ్లు క్రికెట్‌ పరుగుల్లాగా హాకీలో గోల్స్‌ చేస్తారని వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. ఇక బెర్లిన్‌లో 1936 లో జరిగిన ఒలంపిక్స్‌ పోటీల్లో పాల్గొనే వరకు ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ మామూలు సిపాయి గానే ఉన్నారు. అక్కడ కూడా భారత దేశం స్వర్ణ పతకాన్ని సాధించింది. ఆ పోటీల్లో మన దేశం చేసిన 38 గోల్స్‌ లలో 11 గోల్స్‌ ధ్యాన్‌ చంద్‌ చేసినవే. బెర్లిన్‌ విజయంలో గుర్తింపుగా భారత దేశంలోని నాటి బ్రిటిష్‌ ప్రభుత్వం ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌కు సైన్యంలో నాయక్‌గా పదోన్నతి కల్పించింది. నాటి జర్మన్‌ నియంత హిట్లరుకు ఈ విషయం తెలిసి ధ్యాన్‌ చంద్‌ తో కరచాలనం చేసి నువ్వు నా దేశస్ధుడివై ఉంటే నీకు కల్నల్‌ పదవి ఇచ్చిఉండే వాడినన్నారు. భారత దేశానికి స్వాతంత్ర్యం లభించిన పిదప ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌కు సైన్యంలో మేజరు పదవి లభించింది. హాకీ ఆటకు అతను చేసిన సేవకు గుర్తింపుగా భారత ప్రభుత్వం పద్మ భూషణ్‌ అవార్డుతో సత్కరించింది. కాగా 1979 డిసెంబరు 3న ఈ గొప్ప హాకీ క్రీడా కారుడు స్వర్గస్తుడయ్యారు.
ధ్యాన్‌చంద్‌ హాకీ రంగానికి చేసిన విశిష్ట సేవలకు గుర్తింపుగా కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఆయన జన్మదినమైన ఆగష్టు 29 వ తేదీని జాతీయ క్రీడాదినోత్సవంగా ప్రకటించింది.
అసమాన ప్రతిభ కలిగిన ఆయనకు భారత రత్న రావాల్సిఉంది. కాని ఆయనకు భారత రత్న ఇస్తే మనకేంటి లాభం " అనుకునే వాళ్లున్నంత వరకు అది రాదు.

As a teenager, Abitha used to go and see the serial television serial, Nancy starring Sanghavi, being filmed near her house in Thiruvottiyur. The director of that serial recognised her and spoke to her parents, roping her in to play the heroine's sister in their next TV serial Criminal.[1] After doing a couple of serials, she did a low-budget film titled Golmaal as the sister of the lead lady and then a soft core film titled Devadasi in Malayalam. At that time, director Bala roped her in for a leading role in Sethu alongside Vikram, which she signed after Keerthi Reddy and Rajshri had dropped out.[2]Bala renamed her Abitha from her original name of Jenila for the film, after the character she was portraying. The film opened in December 1999 at a single noon show at a suburban theatre but built up through word-of-mouth publicity and ran over one hundred at several cinema halls across Chennai, becoming a critical and commercial success. Sethu won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil and secured wins in the Best Film category at the Filmfare Awards and the Cinema Express Awards, while Abitha won critical acclaim for her role of a timid Brahmin girl.[3] After Sethu's success, Abitha was flooded with offers but chose to complete her studies and finish her PG in Sociology from Annamalai University. She revealed by the time she decided to comeback, she had lost her contacts in the industry and was only then seen after in a couple of insignificant projects.[4]
She appeared alongside veteran actor Ramarajan in Seerivarum Kaalai before starring in Poove Pen Poove alongside newcomer Ishaq Husseini. After the failure of those films she played the role of Arjun's sister in Arasatchi. In 2005 she got another breakthrough and signed on to play the lead role in Kannamma scripted by Karunanidhi, but to do so she unceremoniously opted out of another film titled Ullakadathal. Subsequently the producers of that film complained and got her banned by the Producer's Council, leaving her out of both films.[5][6] Later that year she featured inUnarchigal alongside Abbas and Kunal, and prior to release the film made headlines for being labelled as a "sex film".[7] Her next film was Suyetchai MLA, which had a delayed release in 2006, and featured her opposite Sathyaraj and she was last seen in Nam Naadu as the wife of Saranraj.
Abitha married in 2009 and has since continued to work in tele-serials, notably playing the lead role in Thangamana Purushan and Thirumathi Selvam.[8]
